There are just some aspects of the job that never get easier for under-sheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman. What makes this time worse is personally knowing the boys involved.
Retired sheriff Bill Gastner is a walking talking historian of Posadas County. When a local youth’s death unearths an old murder victim, Bill is more than willing to lend his knowledge and experience.
Tragedy hits the Romero family like a freight train, leaving Estelle retracing their oldest son’s steps in the days before his death. As she becomes increasingly worried the four-wheeler accident that took Freddy Romero’s life is not as cut and dried as it seems, Estelle is very thankful to have Bill’s help. Digging into the past is Bill‘s forte, because Freddy’s death is not the only one they will be investigating. A small cave in the area holds more than just the skeleton of an old jaguar, leaving Estelle and Bill with a mystery many years in the making.
The solid steady nature of Estelle Reyes-Guzman is a character trait perfectly fitting for a police officer. She approaches every situation with the cool confidence of a trained professional, but there is an undeniable tenderness to her personality. I really enjoy the way she handles herself no matter how dangerous or stressful the circumstances may be. Mr. Havill’s panoramic view of New Mexico’s rugged landscape, and the people who call it home, are brought to life with Estelle and her family and friends in Posadas County.
