When Jane and Adam inherit a generational feud between their families, they take up the mantle without question. After all, their respective great-grandfathers killed one another over ownership of a lost horde of gold coins. When a creditor threatens both families with financial ruin, Jane and Adam form a reluctant alliance to track down the lost gold using clues from a pair of cryptic letters seven decades old. However, they are forced to agree to a devilish contract with the sadistic creditor: a toss of a coin will determine the winner of the gold while the other suffers ruin.

In the face of a thirty-day deadline, Adam and Jane launch a desperate hunt for the treasure in the company of Jane’s aunt and the creditor’s solicitor. Armed only with their wits and seemingly nonsensical lines from the letters, Jane and Adam traverse the back roads and byways of northwest England on the trail of treasure hidden seventy years earlier. The proximity of the journey allows them to unpack their complicated history through combative rounds of verbal sparring. Antagonism gives way to mutual respect, opening the door for the awakening of romantic feelings between the adversaries. However, Adam’s attachment to his land and legacy and the fact that one of them must lose everything appears to doom any such feelings.

Faced with options ranging from poor to disastrous, Jane and Adam must find both the gold and a means to escape the insidious trap. Meanwhile, the thirty-day deadline looms with nothing less than love and life hanging in the balance.
