Roz Lee Meets Santa

When I was a child, we celebrated Christmas with a tree, gifts and participation in the church pageant. However, I never believed in Santa Claus. I know. It’s sad. I blame my mother who said she was so disappointed to find out there wasn’t such a benevolent being that she wanted to spare her children that experience. As I grew into adulthood, I realized what I had truly missed, and vowed my children would believe in themselves, for that is the real lesson of Santa Claus.

It’s not about being naughty or nice. It’s about being loved. Receiving a gift from Santa validates a child’s feeling of self-worth. It tells the child that he or she is loved unconditionally. I personally believe the whole naughty and nice guilt thing is a rather recent addition to the Santa Claus tradition devised to curb the natural exuberance of children.

Given my beliefs on the matter, I can still remember the joy of the first Christmas my husband and I played Santa Claus for our oldest daughter. She was sixteen months old””old enough to be dazzled by a tree with brightly wrapped gifts””most of which were for her! I know she didn’t comprehend the concept of Santa at that age, but she did understand that the “special” gifts found beneath the tree and filling her stocking hanging from the mantel were for her.

The period of believing was short””less than ten years. But if she was disappointed to find that her parents were the ones showering her with love every December 25th, she didn’t let on. The Santa gifts didn’t quit coming just because she knew the truth, reinforcing the message that our love for her was unconditional. That’s a gift she’s carried with her into adulthood. As she contemplates starting a family of her own, I hope she will carry on the tradition with her kids of watching for the jolly old elf who spreads love to children all over the world.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year!
