MFRW: If Only I Could….

Stories about magic and witches were around long before Harry Potter. I was a voracious reader growing up. I remember going to the local library branch and borrowing as many books as allowed. I cannot recall either the title, author, or plot of most of them, but one tale has stuck with me all these years: Edward Eager’s book Half Magic. While there were several books about magic in this series, I only remember the plot in this one.

In the story, children find a coin that grants wishes—but only half of whatever they asked for. For example, one girl wishes her cat could talk (before she knew the coin she was holding was magic), and the animal expresses its thoughts in half-purr/half-words. They go on to make a series of wishes as they figure out how to ask for twice whatever it is they want.  In the end, magic is about control, and that appeals to both children and adults. Who wouldn’t like to be able to fly or otherwise transport themselves to a destination by merely wishing it?

In “Wilhelmina Quigley: Magic School Dropout,” Wilhelmina should be able to do magic. She’s a witch from a long line of witches. Most of the time, however, her spells don’t work. And when they do, chaos often ensues. In this book, she learns that even if her skills aren’t the best, she still has talents, and she relies on them to save her family from the evil stalking them.

BookLife Prize calls it, “a delightfully bewitching story that will spellbind readers from the first page.”

What about you? Have you ever wished for magical powers? What would you do if you had them?
