To you, what is Sci- Fi? Is it adventures which take you into space and beyond? Or is it a journey into a different realm? Publishers, authors, bookstores and even readers have a different classification system for what Sci-Fi is. I happen to think Sci-Fi is just a catch all for the books which are different. For authors who write about worlds we know nothing about… yet!
JRR Tolkien is one of the most creative authors I have found. Who else was able to create the world of Middle Earth and just run with it? I became a fan after seeing the first movie- The Fellowship of the Ring. I had been told these were books for boys (weird, right?) so I had never picked them up until later on in my life. What a wonderful world I found within the pages of these books. I started with the Lord of the Rings and worked backwards. The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, The Books of Lost Tales, The Tolkien Miscellany, etc. I make a point every year of setting aside time to re-read these books. For me, it is as if I am visiting old friends. I lose myself in Middle-Earth with Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Strider, Gollum, Gandalf and their journeys. And yes, I do believe (on a strange level) that these hobbits, dwarves, elves, fairies and men exist. It gives me a little hope for the future.
