For those who don’t know me, I write Erotic Historical Romance with flawed and/or broken characters. My heroines are not perfect ladies but are the wildflowers and wallflowers who have trouble fitting in with their time and circumstances. Their strong emotions and motivations drive their heroes to distraction and wild with desire.
My series, Wild, Wicked and Wanton, is set in Regency Era America. Americans at that time did not tend to make a grand show of Christmas. I was wondering what special foods Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Dalton might have shared on their first Christmas as man and wife? I checked out a cookbook that was published around the same time as their first few years together: American Cookery, Amelia Simmons, 2nd edition [Albany:1796].
This cookbook describes a pumpkin pudding that is a forerunner of pumpkin pie:
Pompkin Pudding No. 1. One quart stewed and strained, 3 pints cream, 9 beaten eggs, sugar, mace, nutmeg and ginger, laid into paste No. 7 or 3, and with a dough spur, cross and chequer it, and baked in dishes three quarters of an hour.
Pompkin Pudding No. 2. One quart of milk, 1 pint pompkin, 4 eggs, molasses, allspice and ginger in a crust, bake 1 hour.
For many people, the Christmas baking is a cherished pleasure that helps set tone for the holiday season. The scents of sugar and spice fill the house and fill people’s hearts with inner warmth and love. Such sensual delights relax the mind and build anticipation for the celebrations to come.
Some of us prefer to visit the bakery or to purchase a frozen pie to bake because this is more convenient to our modern, busy lives. But the motivation is the same. We look forward to sharing our favorite treats with those we love and to share them in our memories with those who are now parted from us.
My favorite is classic pumpkin pie. Pumpkin Cheesecake will do nicely too! I prefer them with lots of whipped cream.
