Hello, again!
I’ve been noticing a whole lot of shifter-love, today, and boy does it make me feel all mushy. š Obviously, I have a bit of a bias toward shifters, but I think it’s well earned!
The Urban Fantasy and Paranormal realm have always been incredible places for creativity and free-flowing thought and ideas. From vampires to angels to shifters to Fae to creatures yet-unnamed by their authors. What is it about these people that fascinate us so?
I’ve spent a good while considering today’s theme and it occurs to me:
Many Alpha males (and UF/PNR heroes) are animalistic. Basic. Heated. Sensual and primal. In fact, alpha-male heroes reign supreme in UF/PNR! Even if they’re secondary characters and don’t hold a candle to the women who lead.
For today, I want to talk about shifters.
What makes a shifter so romantic? What aspects of these animals do we want so much? Is it the primal passionate nature that leads to such honesty to one’s self? Maybe the extra aggression? A unique form of sympathy and sensitivity?
I have a number of shifters in Aces Wild. In the upcoming novella (due out in October), you’ll meet some more characters that aren’t dragons. They’re all completely different. And in Book Two of the series, you’ll meet even more. And I love each and every one of them.
For me, shifters represent a return to primal truths. And a lot of alpha-maleness which I totally adore (dreamy sigh). But it’s more than that. It’s their strength, unique and yet familiar. It’s those loyal and selfless traits.
And the ability to speak, of course, which sometimes helps in a relationship.
Sometimes.
Also, opposable thumbs, which always helps in a relationship, amiright? *snicker*
But shifters, I think, hold a very special place in the hearts of their readers. Unique from other character archetypes.
Why do you think that is?
