Excerpt:
Ace eyed Spike, uncertain if that was the true reason for him continuing to hold her or not. “Fine, but I still need to see what’s going on.â€
“Just don’t get any closer to the doorway.†Spike rested his hands on his hips as if he’d take action if she didn’t follow his orders.
Unwilling to argue, she turned. The scene before her again caused her to gasp in shock. The tree, which had shattered, had caught several men in its scattering debris. One man lay on the ground with a spike in his leg while several others spread out around him gave the impression of being dead.
Horror at the violence kept her gaze transfixed to the action. What did these rebels hope to gain?
The fighting continued. Payton, standing in the creek bed a short distance away from the fallen men, sent a stream of blasting spells at the rebels on the left while Tabby did the same with the group on the right.
Searching the area for Vicki, the horses, the donkey…Ace caught sight of Saw’s tall form. He marched into the open field like a commander who had a thousand troops behind him. Yet, no one followed.
She blinked, silently wishing she could offer him some support.
But…she wasn’t needed.
No, destruction engulfed the area in a fierce storm. Fireballs exploded, hitting the ground. Dust shot high into the air as fire scorched earth. Horses screeched, rearing up onto their hind legs in panic. Men fell from their mounts, shaken and confused by the fierce onslaught. The foot soldiers striding behind the horsemen ran to their aid, only to be knocked to the ground by the next bombardment of shots.
Completely outmanned by Saw, they stumbled to their feet, their movement jerky and unorganized. They blundered about, some catching the reins of a fleeing horse and riding away while others were dashing for the trees edging the creek.
In a mere moment, the rebels had disappeared, leaving Saw alone in the middle of the pasture.
Payton and Tabby walked from the creek bed. Both appeared unharmed, but with their arms locked around each other, Ace couldn’t be certain they had no injuries.
“Where’s Vicki?†She edged forward, searching the area near the camp.
Spike darted in front of her, blocking her path to the open doorway. “Last time I saw her, she had jumped on Biscuit’s back and was riding along the creek bed, while I escaped in the other direction to come find you and Saw.â€
“Then where is she now?†Ace didn’t like the idea of one of the rebels capturing her friend.
Worry passed over Spike’s face. He opened his mouth as if to say…
A rustling noise interrupted, followed by the low snort of a horse.
Ace glanced at the floor, uncertain if she should move, and then looked at Spike.
His eyes wide, he lifted his hand, placing a single digit over his mouth.
Like I don’t know to be quiet. Ace glared and shifted her feet. The floor creaked.
“Might as well, come out.†A man’s voice stated from below. “Your friend here is getting a little lonely.â€
Spike stepped forward and whispered, “Do you have a spell you can throw at him?â€
Ace shook her head but closed her eyes to quickly reformulate the spell she had worked on with Saw earlier.
“Hey, you’re hurting me.†Vicki’s cry broke through Ace’s concentration, adding a sharp musical pitch to the violence scene in her head.
“All right already, we’re on our way.†Spike stepped by her.
