Rebecca was sold to a cult when she was a new adult. At the time she lost Travis, the man she knew was her mate, and was forced to “marry” a sadistic cult member. Embroiled in a cult that abuses and kills women, she knows she may never escape alive. That is until a shifter shows up and promptly gets himself murdered by the cult leader. The only good thing to come out of it is the man’s cell phone that Rebecca is able to confiscate, and make a call.
Travis thought his first lover Rebecca was long dead, and in her absence he has dedicated his life to protecting shifters. He is stunned when he receives a phone call from one of his operatives, or so he thinks, and hears Rebecca’s voice for the first time in years.
When Travis hears Rebecca’s voice for the first time in years on a cell phone that one of his operatives knows, and then hears her screaming, he knows he has only finite amount of time to get to her before she is killed or worse. He puts a plan into motion to save not just Rebecca but any women they can from the cult. Unfortunately, by the time he and his team arrive, Rebecca has been tortured and on the edge of death. Fortunately, she survives the torture, but she is not the young woman he remembers; she jumps at every sound, and she has been repeatedly raped and beaten down. He does not know if he will be able to reach her, but he has no intention of giving up on her. Rebecca on the other hand is ecstatic that she and other women have been rescued, but it is a long slow road to recovery, and while she still loves Travis, and he seems to feel the same, she is not sure what will happen because not all the cult leaders were captured, and she knows they will not easily let her and the other women go. Can Travis heal Rebecca, and can she learn to trust men again? Will they catch her so-called “husband” who is still on the loose or will he separate her and Travis just as they are finding each other again?
This was an emotional read, and while I highly recommend it, it could be a difficult read for those who are abuse or cult survivors. The world building is realistic, and the author clearly did her research on cults and what happens in them, making that part of the story almost too realistic. However, I loved how Travis gently brings Rebecca to him again, and teaches her to trust him. I loved how he got her counseling right away, and did not push her to have any kind of sexual relationship until she was ready. The suspense in this book kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next. The love scenes when they finally happened between Travis and Rebecca were beautiful and erotic. I was very satisfied with the conclusion of this story. I will most definitely be reading the rest of this author’s books, I really enjoyed this one!
