My Thirteen Favorite Romantic Movies

Okay, I will admit it: I am a big ol’ ,mushy, girly girl! Not many people know that about me. I love to pull out those romantic movies when no one else is around, pop a huge bowl of buttered popcorn, grab a box of tissues and snuggle on the couch with one or three of my canine kids to watch a sappy love story. My husband of almost 17 years loves movies, but he likes to skip the mushy ones, if at all possible. So, I end up watching them alone, with my furbabies.

There are a few you won’t find mentioned in my list because, to be frank, they are on everybody’s list. I love Pretty Woman and Titanic, but these thirteen are the movies I pull out when I am alone. Yes, a few of them bring tears to my eyes, but mostly, they add a smile to my heart.
Not all of them are considered romantic. There is a suspense thrown in the mix, but it is the romantic twist  that makes me love it.

1. Chocolat- an Irish river rat (Johnny Depp) and a chocolatier (Juliette Binoche) find passion is a very quiet French village- Johnny Depp and chocolate, what more does a girl need?

2. Dragonfly- Kevin Costner- This one is more suspense, but the romance is the way his wife communicates with him beyond the grave. Love extends from this world into the next, how cool is that?

3. Simply Irresistible- Sarah Michelle Gellar and Sean Patrick Flanery- Magic, romance and tantilizing food, need I say more?

4. Catch and Release- Jennifer Garner and Timothy Olyphant- A little sad, but it is the way you sometimes find the thing you need most where you least expect it. That and, Timothy Olyphant, where can you go wrong?

5. Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty- An oldie, but a goodie. Prince Phillip has always been my favorite prince and Aurora, my favorite princess. I think, it’s because he slays dragons for Aurora. Sometimes a girl needs an old-fashioned dragon slayer to ride in on his white steed to save the day. Not always because most of the time she can save herself.

6. The Notebook- Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner and Gena Rowlands- I know, I know, I know… but this is one of the best. Noah and Allie are such an incredible couple.

7. P.S. I Love You- Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler- This was one movie I was hoping to not like, but then I watched it. Wow, there were some powerful scenes. Ones that ripped my heart to shreds and ones that made me laugh so hard my tummy hurt.

8. Hope Floats- Sandra Bullock, Harry Connick, Jr.- Birdee is so used to life being exactly right and when it all falls apart, she discovers she is stronger than she ever thought. Right beside her is the man who has loved her for so long.

9. Tristan and Isolde- James Franco, Sophia Myles- A tale as old as time itself. A forbidden love…ahhh, it makes my heart sigh.

10. The Butcher’s Wife- Demi Moore, Jeff Daniels- Once again, a story entrenched in magic. Another story about finding love with the person you would least expect.

11. Straight From the Heart- Teri Polo, Andrew McCarthy- Set in the mountains of Wyoming, the scenery is made for a love story. Jordan finds herself. Tyler figures it all out and together. They find the love they’ve been missing in their lives. I laugh, I cry, I yell at them both throughout the entire movie. I’m a passionate girl.

12. Sweet November- Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron- Sara takes Nelson and gives him a month out of her life. She shares her heart and apartment with him and shows him that life is more than he imagined. Mmmm…Keanu Reeves.

13. The Wedding Date- Debra Messing, Dermot Mulroney- This is sexy and smart, funny and romantic. Another case of finding love in the oddest of places.

Thank you for letting me share these with you. If you haven’t seen them, give them a try. If you already have, try them again. They all sit in my collection waiting for another day when I need to feel like a girly girl.

I just watched P.S. I love you. So sad I cried almost all the way through it.

If you haven’t seen it watch An Affair to Remember. Its an oldie 1958, but one of the best romances I’ve ever seen.

    Happy TT.
