November is National Veterans and Military Families month, and we just celebrated Veteran’s Day on November 11. First, thanks to everyone for their service to our country. The month honors veterans as well as recognizes the sacrifices and unique challenges faced by military families. Second, military romances have always been popular, but lately even more so with the resurgence of stories taking place during World War Two.
What is it about a man in uniform – is it the uniform itself that fits snug at the shoulders and hips, and trim at the waist? Is it the air of authority that commands respect? Is it the bravery they display during times of danger? Or is it all of the above that can stir a woman’s heart?
And don’t forget the brave women working beside them in strong and important roles, whether it’s in the military itself or in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during wartime, often overlooked. It’s only been in recent times that the role of women during these perilous times has been recognized. The fledgling organization had just begun in 1942 and at its inception, General William Donovan felt there was great potential in recruiting women. Of the 13,000 personnel that made up the OSS, more than 4,000 officers were women, more than one-third of its staff. While some worked domestically, others engaged in espionage, propaganda, and sabotage, risking their lives numerous times in the service of their country.
I wrote my book “The Magician’s Daughter” to help highlight the important role women played in wartime operations. The book takes place on a US Army Air Force Base outside London in 1942 as a way of providing a different backdrop for the novel, as opposed to setting it in Nazi-Occupied Europe. I wanted to focus on several interesting areas, including highlighting the women working for the newly established Office of Strategic Services (OSS), Eleanor Roosevelt’s visit to the troops in England, and introducing a character loosely based on Jasper Maskelyne, known as “The War Magician.”
In the book, I portray a woman forced to deal with treacherous Nazi spies, high-level fascist conspiracies, and escalating sabotage on US Army Air Force Bases all over southeastern England, while trying to save the life of the base commander she loves. My main character finds herself embroiled in a frightening labyrinth of lies and deceit, where nothing is as it seems. As the attacks increase, suspicions mount and even her sanity is questioned. With no one to turn to and no one who will believe her, she fights desperately to defend herself before the vicious threats claim the lives of both Eleanor Roosevelt and the man she so desperately loves.
