Mari Perkins is a well-educated orphan seeking a position as a governess. She needs a job in London to follow up on a clue about her long lost family.
Edgar, Duke of Banksford is not only a duke but an engineer, inventor and owner of a foundry. He needs help with his two unruly illegitimate children.
Mari is determined to find out if she has any surviving family. All she brought with her to the orphanage was a wooden rabbit and a prayer book. A lawyer came to the orphanage to find her two years before and was turned away. She needs to find him, but first she needs a job. A bit of deception brings her to the Duke of Banksford’s home, and it turns out that she is exactly what the children, and their father, need.
This story is interesting on many levels. I loved the Regency take on Mary Poppins, complete with the parrot headed umbrella and the spoonful of sugar. The duke is not an idle nobleman but a hardworking owner of a successful business and a visionary inventor trying to improve steam engines for transportation and firefighting. The author has obviously done a lot of research about these things and creatively weaves history into the story. The love story is full of unexpected twists and turns and the duke’s family story is rather tragic. Lady India is an incredibly interesting character and I look forward to her story in the next installment of this series.
