Olive the Woolly Bugger has one dream, to catch fish, making her parents proud. She is thrilled to be headed to Camp Tightloops to learn all about fly-fishing but some of the fly students can be rude.
Randal the Royal Coachman, Sally the Yellow Sally, and Stan the Stimulator are dry flies who enjoy bragging a lot about their fishing. They make a point to show Olive how they really stand out.
On her first day at camp, Olive feels ordinary and not flashy like some of the flies. She is so excited to learn about fly-fishing, hoping to enter The Big Stream and go inside The Fly box. After seeing some of the other colorful flies, she wonders will she even catch a fish. Some of the flies make little remarks hurting her feelings. Olive believes she will never make the cut. A few flies tell her to ignore the snobby flies. When she sees how the other different shape, size and colors of flies, outdo her, she considers giving up. Can the teacher, and some of the other flies, show Olive she has great potential for making one of the twelve to enter The Fly Box?
Olive the Little Woolly Bugger is a story I adored. I love all the fishing flies and illustrations inside this book. I don’t know if it is because I love fishing that I enjoyed this book more, but for anyone who has children, I believe they will get entertainment from it as well, not to mention a huge learning experience. Kirk Werner instills a delightful colorful cast of flies. I love how the author describes the flies. Share in this great read and learn how Olive braves uneasy situations, never becoming a quitter. A great sweet read with an ending I loved.
