Memories to Last a Lifetime
This is one of my favorite times of the year. I have so many wonderful Christmas memories from my childhood, so to pick just one is difficult. Fires in the fireplace. Hot cocoa with marshmallows. Wrapping presents on the kitchen table.
But, my strongest memories were of my dad waking us up Christmas morning with a bright spotlight. My father was an avid photographer and cinematographer. He would take 8mm films of us running out of our rooms and down the hall to see what Santa brought. Of course in those days, it required a large amount of light. It was like getting blasted with a 3000 lumen torch. Despite being blinded and seeing spots for most of my childhood, my father preserved those memories. It was many years later that we converted those film reels to DVD and gave it as a present to all my sisters. My, how times have changed. Over the years my dad moved from 8mm to the first VCR Camcorder. The light source got smaller””thank goodness.
I have now shared my childhood videos with my kids. We all laugh and giggle. There isn’t any sound, but the smiles say it all. I never realized it at the time, but my dad left us with a legacy””one, we are carrying forward to our own family. Every year my husband and I pull out the digital camcorder, minus the bright spotlight and film them running down the steps to see what Santa left them.
