What got you into writing?

An overactive imagination, combined with shyness as a youth, is the recipe for many a writer. In storytelling, I could go anywhere, do anything. I still use it as a means to explore places I want to go, even though I am less shy as an adult (but still blessed with an overactive imagination).

If you could date any character from any book, who would it be and why?

Most of the characters I enjoy reading are terribly flawed, and though I enjoy them in fiction, I would never date them in real life. If pressed, I would choose Charles Bingley from Pride and Prejudice, who I’ve always liked more than Darcy (I know, I know, I’m strange). I might like the brooding, broken sort for fiction, but in reality, I will always go for the nice guys. Kindness is a person’s most attractive feature (followed closely by a sense of humor).

Is there a genre you would like to write in but haven’t yet?

I’m doing so! After writing and publishing seven romances and one women’s fiction short, I am turning my attention to a New Adult series. It’s energizing to test my writing skills against a new challenge.

What’s the strangest inspiration you ever got for a story idea?

True story: writers hear voices. It’s commonplace for us to have conversations with these voices, to find out who they are and what they want, and then write them down to tell their stories. My most current character woke me at 4:00 one morning. He said, “I have a problem, and I’m not letting you go back to sleep until you figure out how to fix it.” I fought him for a little while, but in the end, he won. I am now on Book Two of his story, and having the time of my life telling it.

Who was the first person to tell you to reach for your dreams?

I knew in junior high school that I wanted to write. I can’t even recall who first encouraged that spark. It was compulsory. Organic. I floundered around the universe with that spark for several years until I met the Central New York Romance Writers, who helped me shape that spark into a career. These amazing men and women are on the same path as me, and I now have an extended family that understands this crazy writing life.

Were you an avid reader before you began to write?

Every writer is a reader first. It’s simply a question of which book made them realize they wanted to do it, too. For me, that book was The Black Stallion by Walter Farley. It was a simple leap from daydreaming of that horse to writing books of my own.

If one of your books could be made into a movie, which one would it be, and what actors would play the characters?

I’d love to see THE SERPENT IN THE STONE made into a movie, or my New Adult series, but I have such a vivid picture of the characters in my head that none of the current actors or actresses compares. If given the choice, I’d audition unknown actors and actresses. I’d know them when I see them!

Thank you so much for spending a little time with me today. I’d love for you to visit me at my website, where you can learn how to download my free short story, FINDING HOME. Happy Reading!
