Discovering Hidden Worlds through Comics: an Evening with G. Neri
March 26 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT
G. Neri, the Eisner finalist and Coretta Scott King honoring-winning author of YUMMY and CONCRETE COWBOY, likes to go where few dare, whether it’s the mean streets of Chicago’s Southside or the end of the world in Antarctica.
He uses comics to tell compelling stories for young people, and his latest graphic novel, SAFE PASSAGE and his unique hybrid, MY ANTARCTICA, are proof that comics can tell any kind of story in fresh and innovative ways. Join Neri as he talks about exploring these hidden worlds to bring people of all ages new stories they’ve never heard about.

SAFE PASSAGE is an epic journey across the South Side of Chicago for 15-year-old Darius, his little sister Cissy, and his best friend Booger as they set out to find an armored truck rumored to have lost a payload of cash. What they dream will be a quick fix to their families’ mounting hardships, turns into a nightmare of survival in a day that seems to never end. The Hugo and Eisner-winning author John Jennings calls it “an amazing achievement and a prime example of what the comics medium can do when true masters are at the height of their craft.”
MY ANTARCTICA is a captivating travel memoir that explores Antarctica through the curiosity and wonder of Neri’s inner child—the kid who dreamed of one day becoming an explorer. Kirkus calls it “a lively and revealing visit to our remotest continent will give armchair travelers all the more incentive to put trips to the still largely unexplored continent on their bucket lists.”
Dr. Greg Neri is the Printz and Coretta Scott King award-winning author of 15 books for young people, including CONCRETE COWBOY, which was adapted into the Netflix movie starring Idris Elba, and YUMMY, which was hailed by CNN as one of the 25 most essential graphic novels of all-time. In 2017, he was awarded an NSF Artists and Writers grant to go to Antarctica, and is currently co-chair of the Antarctic Artists and Writers Collective. Neri was recently given an honorary doctorate by SUNY for his literary output and polar science outreach. He lives in Tampa. For more info, visit his website: www.gneri.com .
