EXCERPT
Lucas leaned against the ferry’s railing, gazing at the turquoise waters below. He inhaled a deep breath of salty air. No matter how powerful this stimuli, it was always overwhelmed by bitter memories of his father. The last place he wanted to be was here at the old man’s wedding. It had been seven years since they’d laid eyes on each other. Maybe that was a lucky number for them. Maybe things would be different this time.
“How long is this going to take?” a feminine voice asked.
He turned to find Nyla Maxwell by his side. She hadn’t relaxed one bit since she’d stormed into the baggage claim office hours earlier. He’d had no choice but to drag her with him. He couldn’t leave her all alone. There was a shady side of St. Lucia few tourists got to see. With the Jazz Festival crowds as thick as clam chowder, criminals were also out in full force. She might end up robbed, or worse.
His eyes dropped to her stained, wrinkled shirt. He towered over her, getting a good view of her cream colored bra. The tops of her plump breasts teased him through her unbuttoned collar. She might have a hard attitude, but her cleavage looked delectably soft.
His gaze collided with hers. She’d caught him looking down her shirt. “Didn’t your mother ever tell you it’s rude to stare?” she chided.
His mother never told him anything. She was too busy nursing her addiction to be of any use to anyone else. He shrugged. “I figure if you women didn’t want us to look, you wouldn’t put ‘em on display.”
She smirked. “Your biography never mentioned you were a psychiatrist. You’ve got our gender all figured out.”
“It’s not that hard. You ladies get waxed, weaved, spritzed, sprayed, pushed in, plumped out, and all dressed up—just to grab our attention. Then, when we give it you, you act insulted. It’s all one big game of cock tease.”
“I don’t know what kind of females you’re used to dealing with.” She brandished a forefinger in his direction. “Wait, yes I do. The brown-nosing groupies who cling to you like metal shavings on a magnet. Of course, they’re going out of their way to get you to notice them. They want that pot of gold at the end of your rainbow.”
“He clutched his heart. “That is the cruelest, most insensitive thing anyone has said to me in my entire life.”
“Right. Somehow I don’t think you’ve ever had your feelings hurt.”
“I admit it takes a lot to rain on my sunny outlook. I am curious about one thing, though.”
“My bra size is none of your business.”
“See? I wasn’t even going there. I was wondering why you didn’t get new clothes at the airport? They have a few shops there.”
A look of horror crossed her pretty features. “I refuse to pay for some stupid, over-priced tourist t-shirts at the airport.”
“An overpriced t-shirt would be a whole lot better than walking around looking like you just crawled out of a dumpster.”
She shook her head. “Just when I think you can’t shock me anymore, you say something uncalled for like that.”
“I didn’t mean it in a negative manner.”
“If that’s your definition of positive, I need a new dictionary.”
