Eat Your Words by Tamela Miles

Angelica nervously cleared her throat and chanted in ancient words, passed down from one
generation of witches and warlocks to another. She raised her arms high again. “Release me
from the Parry family curse and let me come into my full power tonight. In exchange, I
surrender to your will for my mate. I’ll happily bond with the one of your choosing. With this
decree, I relinquish all control of my choice of a husband to you, Divine Ones.”

The circle of protection continued to burn brightly as thunder crashed and boomed. A bolt of
lightning arced and struck the large tree towards the back of the yard. A distressed animal
howl split the air, and a huge black tom cat scampered down the trunk and took off across the
wet grass towards the side of the house.

A surge of energy raced through her body, and it was the most amazing feeling ever. She was
imbued with magick, ancient words that she had no understanding of before filled her mind.
She focused her entire being on the large fallen tree branch, willing it to burn. She was
delighted when it went up in flames with a whoosh. So, this is it what it feels like to be a real
witch. Now, we’re playing with power…

Overjoyed that she had done the forbidden and come out unscathed, she danced in abandon
around the circle.

The big black tom cat moved with purpose, making his way down deserted streets and alleys
towards his home. As a familiar, he had done his job well and he knew that, in exchange for
his knowledge about what he had just witnessed, a full bowl of treats waited for him. The cat’s
lips parted, his pink tongue swiping across. Who said cats can’t grin?

The tom darted through the cat entry flap on the back door of his home and Aurin Tanner
looked up with a small smile. “Obsidian, welcome home. I was about to go looking for you
with the car. I know how much you dislike rainy days.” The young warlock closed the ancient
book of spells he had been reading and pushed himself up from the oversized black leather
chair. He tossed the bag of black jellybeans he’d been devouring on the huge wood table.
Obsidian moved to stand in front of him and spoke, as he always did, in his mind. “Rain is not
my favorite thing. I have news to share about your favorite girl, though.”

Aurin lifted a dark eyebrow, immediately intrigued. “This is about Angelica Parry? Spill it.”
The tom relayed the events he’d witnessed at the Parry girl’s home, making sure to include
every detail right down to the lightning strike that had driven him out of the tree. Aurin’s face
revealed no emotion, but his heart thumped unevenly in his chest as images of her swirled in
his mind. He quietly spoke to Obsidian. “So…she’s a girl no more.” His lips lifted in a smile,
and he rubbed the cat’s head affectionately. “Well done, my familiar. Can I offer you a reward
of liver treats?”

Aurin headed from his room to the kitchen, barely noticing Obsidian eagerly following.
