Liz McCall is the manager of her father’s vintage toy shop and, to some extent, his caretaker since he was forced to retire due to a near fatal line of duty incident.
Hank McCall is the former police chief of East Aurora, NY. He was forced to retire after nearly being killed in the line of duty. He is now the proud owner of Well Played, a vintage toy store.
Liz and Hank are settling into their new lives as the proprietors of Well Played, or Liz is settling in. Hank is still unable to completely stop being a police chief, much to the chagrin of his replacement. When a man is found dead in the store with a lawn dart in his chest, Hank and Liz have to find the real killer since Hank is the main and most obvious suspect.
East Aurora is a pretty typical Western New York town, and the author does a great job of describing it and setting the atmosphere. Her characters are quirky yet realistic and she provides clues to the mystery, but does not make it easy for the reader to solve the puzzle. In addition to the well plotted mystery, I enjoyed the interaction between Liz and her family. They are very real, with strengths and weaknesses, and the author even gave the reader a little of the backstory of the family. She also provided some possible romantic prospects for Liz, first her high school sweetheart, and second, the new police chief. I am looking forward to reading more of this series.
