A seductive, insidious blanket that swaddled Mackenzie Bishop and held her tight, then cruelly and indiscriminately released her with no respect for time or place. And as that fog lifted, reality set in.

She was a widow.

She`d gotten word in the middle of the night and had initially convinced herself it was just a bad dream. So much so that she forced herself to go back to sleep so she could wake up again to prove it. But when she did Kenzie found herself trapped in a nightmare that would become her new normal. And the worst was yet to come.

She went through the motions on autopilot—the service, the luncheon, the Honors Ceremony. Whenever reality tried to rear its ugly head, Kenzie traded it for denial. Matt was deployed. One of those missions where he was out of touch for weeks at a time. If something happened, she`d know.

Sophie greets Armand Mason with a smile and a brief handshake. Mason is a middle-aged man with dark skin and even darker hair. He wears a green button-down, but the sleeves are rolled to his elbows in deference to the summer heat.

His grip is firm but not overpowering. He has callouses on his hands, in different places than Sophie does. She suspects his are from holding pencils or, maybe in this modern age, a tablet stylus. Sophie’s callouses are from gripping her hockey stick and from all the weightlifting she does.

Elsa shakes Armand’s hand next. “Thank you for agreeing to meet with us,” she says.

Elsa, who normally only has a scant few inches on Sophie, has closer to four today, because she’s wearing wedge sandals. They’re open-toed to show off her lime-green toenail polish. The color clashes with Elsa’s dress, a light-pink halter-top. The green-pink combination reminds Sophie of watermelon, but she’s smart enough not to mention it to Elsa.

Maddie is relegated to the role of housekeeper and caretaker of her family, while her sister gets to go to college, socialize and have a life, and her father is so wrapped up in his own grief that he thinks what is easiest for him is what is best for his daughter. Tyler is another situation entirely. His mother has decided what role he is to play in Tyler Toys, he wants to be creative and work in development, and he is set up to fail so that she can have her way. I love how Maddie and Tyler see each other as they really are and not how their families see them. There are a lot of interesting and hilarious twists and turns, particularly with Maddie’s insufferable erstwhile fiancé Oliver. Definitely take a ride down Route 66 with this couple, it’s a heck of a trip.

The Review

I really enjoyed this fast-paced story. Eric and Kara are two very relatable and well written characters. I never really thought of Valkyries as the warriors they are and that they might suffer from the same horrors as the soldiers that they save. Both characters are damaged by the horrors of their past but still manage to remain honorable. The story itself is fast moving and exciting and I am fascinated by the town of Eerie and its inhabitants. I will definitely be visiting this interesting little town again very soon.

The Review

I really enjoyed this fast-paced story. Eric and Kara are two very relatable and well written characters. I never really thought of Valkyries as the warriors they are and that they might suffer from the same horrors as the soldiers that they save. Both characters are damaged by the horrors of their past but still manage to remain honorable. The story itself is fast moving and exciting and I am fascinated by the town of Eerie and its inhabitants. I will definitely be visiting this interesting little town again very soon.
