Contemporary main character, Tony Solomon, never expected to be a time traveler. But when a freak accident gifts him with the ability to travel in time, he becomes an unwilling initiate in a secret society of time travelers. Determined to prevent his daughter’s murder three years earlier, he violates the Society’s highest law and becomes a fugitive. But the Society has him on their hit list as a violator of their rules. They have refused to tell Tony how to time-travel within his own life. He seeks help from Charlotte, the woman whose life he saved in the Dayton, Ohio flood of 1913, and whom he knows as Violet, a co-worker in the present day.
Tony arrives in 1933 looking for answers to his moral and scientific dilemma. Charlotte is both thrilled and terrified to see her childhood hero. Loyal to the Society, she is honor-bound to bring to justice those who manipulate time for their own gain. In giving him sanctuary, she faces a terrible choice: condemn the man she loves and to whom she owes her life, or deny her deepest convictions by helping him escape and risk sharing his sentence.
The title says it all, because Tony wants more than anything to save his daughter from the violent tragedy that took her life, but he must defy the laws of nature; the time continuum. If he does save his daughter, he will create a domino effect in the universe that causes rips and bubbles in time. This is an emotional and moral conundrum, but he is determined to right the wrong for which he blames himself and save his daughter. Charlotte may be the one person who can talk him out of it.
This was the craziest, spottiest, most unbelievable book this reviewer has ever read, but I could not put it down. The characters were clear and well-drawn. The popping in and out of eras and changes in the surroundings in Dayton, Ohio, a place I have lived, failed to confuse me. That says a lot for the skill of the author. The male POV, a hard thing for a woman to sustain, was excellently maneuvered.
