The promotion is a great opportunity for Superintendent Steven Crayle; one in which he intends to make the most of. No longer working with Hillary is the only down-side, but hopefully they will be even closer as a couple very soon.
With Steven’s question hanging over her head, Hillary is extremely grateful for the diversion of another cold case. Several years have passed since Sylvia Perkins was murdered in her home, and it is up to Hillary and her new recruits to find the answers. Everyone in the elderly lady’s small village were horrified by her death, with no clue as to who could have done something so awful. Hillary may have a few ideas of her own – it will just be a matter of time to see if she is on the right track.
Hillary’s character is everything you want to be when you grow up. She is independent, well-respected, and smarter than just about anyone around her. I also love the way Ms. Martin dishes out tiny hints of Hillary’s deductive reasoning, giving you the feeling you are one of her recruits. Each book in this series makes you want to dive right into the next, especially when there are several loose ends to tie up, and this one does exactly that.
