True Crime
Rating: 3 Cups

Susan Polk was a troubled teenager and an even more troubled adult. Married to her former therapist and the mother of three sons, she becomes more disturbed over time.

Felix Polk was a therapist who followed all trends therapy took throughout the years. He committed the ultimate ethical sin by having an affair with a young patient and eventually marrying her, but he paid for his mistake with his life.

When Susan Polk murdered her husband Felix, the facts hardly had to be sensationalized. The severely disturbed housewife was her husband’s patient before she was his wife, he was married when they first became involved, and she ultimately became her own defense attorney, never a good idea. Ms. Pogash tells the story of the crime and its aftermath.

This is a very well researched and detailed account of a truly bizarre case. Susan and Felix’s story is too strange to be anything but fact, and the author presents those facts and the views of those involved in a very readable book that fans of true crime will be unable to put down. I am not usually a fan of that genre; however, I found myself gripped by the story and the courtroom dramas that followed the grisly crime. The author really does a good job on this part of the story from the trial itself to the jury deliberation as well as delving into the mind of a madwoman. Ms. Pogash proves once again that truth is indeed stranger than fiction.
