Adopting Leila is Sarah Hargreave’s chance to give a child the loving home and family she never had growing up. At eighteen she struck gold when she walked into Sam’s clock shop, because without him her life would be dramatically different.

Getting adopted by the Cartwrights was a lucky break for Ilona “Nonie” Blanchard, which she took full advantage of. She may not have received the love she wanted so badly, but a first class education and law degree are worth more to her than a childish dream.

When Sam passed, Sarah focused all her attention on adopting a child, yet being a forever mommy to Leila is not easy at all. The court ordered visitations with Leila’s bio mother are destroying every bit of progress they make. Unfortunately, Sarah sees no way of stopping them. She needs a better lawyer, but Ilona is nothing like the Nonie Sarah looked up to in the group home. With her nerves nearing the breaking point, Sarah doubts herself and everyone around her, which is no way to raise a child.

It is a complete travesty that the fictional characters and events in this story are all too close to the truth. The horrifying conditions these children are subjected to makes this story very hard to read, but also necessary. All of the mission groups and government aid dollars going halfway around the world need to focus more on what is happening right under our noses, because the thought of innocent children like Leila living like this is just sickening!
