Shoving his hand through his dark red hair, he took sideways steps closer to me. In the encompassing silence, all I heard were our hearts beating. When our feet were toe-to-toe, his chin lowered to his chest. “This boy’s all grown up, Kelly, and this man—me—loves you”—his palm smacked his chest—“deeply. Forever. For always.”
Oh. Bit by bit, a heat curled around my heart and something unfurled like the blooming petals of a stargazer lily. At that moment, love—my love for him—filled my soul, my everything.
I covered my lips with my fingers, barely aware of the tears crowding into my eyes. I’d been blind. Just like Maggie had stated, the love of my life had been in front of me the whole time. I loved Daniel, not the Romeo-playing-doc. Tremors flowed out my fingers and toes. The urge to touch and absorb him overwhelmed me.
Daniel gave me a suggestive side-long wink. My breath caught. No longer did his irises reflect steel and storms, rather sun and stars. He loved me. Daniel loves me.
I’d never been so thrilled. This—this man belonged with me. My one and only. Pushing awkwardly to my feet, I smiled. “I get it.”
“Finally.” He captured me to him, tucking my body to his side. And then, he kissed me. At first, tenderly, to explore and taste, deeply, longingly, slowly. After a brief pause, he returned for more. To turn my body in his embrace and make me wholly his. To discover each other like we hadn’t before now. No longer adversaries, but soon-to-be lovers.
