QUESTION: Of your published titles to date, which heroine is your favorite and why?
Sara Jay said:
Autumn, the paranormal investigator in Falling for Fall, is my favorite heroine… so far. She knows exactly what she wants and won’t settle for less. She’s very secure in her career and her identity, and she’s clear about what she expects in a relationship. Her flaw is that she’s not so sure people can change–or rather that forest gods can change their flighty ways.
The opening scene for Autumn’s debut was written in a 100-word Changeling Press challenge and after that I knew she needed her own book. Who would find themselves outside, locked out of their own house, nearly naked, and why? For Autumn, the reason has to do with her work, and I was as surprised as anyone else when she told me.
Theo, the forest god who wants nothing more than Autumn’s heart, is also one of my favorite characters. He’s a rakish ancient spirit who’s still got the attitude (and body) of a man in his 30s used to getting whatever he wants. He’s powerful and sharp, and he’s not used to someone like Autumn making demands from him. These two were some of the most fun characters to write, and I wrote their story with my favorite season in mind, of course.
I can’t help but want to be a member of Autumn’s team and this is the book where I started to really care about my characters’ friends, sidekicks and background characters. I can see the evolution in later books and I know this stemmed from my desire to see more good friendships, particularly between women, in my stories. Like many writers, I write not necessarily what I know but what I want to read. I also loved how expectant Autumn is when it comes to the attentions of a lover. Too many women give rather than receive and while giving is fun with someone you care about, they’re just not taught that it can and should be a two-way street. I could see Autumn teaching some no-nonsense sexual health classes at a high school and I’m sure they’re quite needed.
Enjoy Autumn and Theo’s story! You can read a sneak peek of it at the Changeling Press link.
