“Someone Else’s Fairytale” was a trove of Google searches that spawned so many browser tabs, I think my laptop was begging for the mercy of oblivion. Spoiler: it was shown no mercy, and the current spate of research is worse.
First was the information on Operation Pied Piper during World War II. Googling that gave me some fascinating information on the logistics of evacuating cities full of children, scholarly papers on the psychological effects of separation from families, and searchable databases filled with the names of those evacuated. I even have a table of what cities sent children to which areas.
Then there was the research on mythologies regarding the role of birds in death and the afterlife. Academia.edu had some very useful scholarly papers to go with the general Google searches on the topic. As it happens, a lot of mythologies connect birds to the process of dying and moving on to what’s next. I’ve got at least six research papers on this now.
After that, I probably ended up on a watch list for Googling “how to efficiently exsanguinate someone” and “how long does it take to bleed out” and “how much blood is in the human body” and “common poisons available in the 1940s”.
Honorable mentions from other books: “projected pyroclastic flows for Mount Rainer” and “fallout map for Yellowstone super-volcano eruption”. And never mind the research about vampiric blood draining’s effect on male sexual function…
