QUESTION: Besides RT and RWA, what’s your favorite book convention to attend and why?
Meg West said:
Although it can be overwhelming at times, the Associated Writing Programs (AWP) Annual Convention provides many opportunities for aspiring and experienced authors. This is both an academic conference (with the majority of presenters being college professors in established creative writing programs across the country) and a chance for independent authors to connect with a wider literary community.
First, the keynote speakers. Each year AWP invites prominent authors such as Colson Whitehead, Lauren Groff, George Saunders, and others to speak about their latest work and their publishing histories. These events are well attended but don’t afford much opportunity for conference participants to interact with the authors.
If your goal is to meet other writers, you will want to attend the sessions on craft and genre and panel discussions on publishing/editing/promotion. There’s also a huge book fair where you can meet independent publishers and magazine editors.
Emphasis is geared more toward “”literary”” fiction, but genre writers can find their niche as well. There are sessions on poetry writing, fiction writing, memoir, screenwriting, science fiction/speculative work, digital storytelling, comics, and hybrid work. With close to 10,000 writers in attendance, you are sure to meet people with like interests here.
In addition to on-site sessions, there are always dozens of off-site readings at local bars, bookstores, and theaters. Last year’s conference was in Tampa and next year’s will be in Portland.
