January 2019: Fact in Fiction

How much of your real life bleeds over into your books? And do you worry that someone will be able to tell the fact from the fiction?

There’s a scene in THE KEEPER, Book 1 in the Crossing Realms paranormal romance series, where the heroine Libby tells the hero, Nick, about how she watched pancreatic cancer ravage her father, and how powerless she felt. She also tells him how going through something like that changed her, and how it made her stronger. It may have even prepared her for what she has to face, when she helps the Keepers (the good guys) fight Betrayers (the bad guys) to save the human race.
That’s a page right out of my own book (except for helping save the human race)! When I wrote that scene, I cried, and I could see every detail in my mind. Writing has always been cathartic for me, and this scene in particular helped me purge the grief and the loss. It’s always my hope if a reader is going through the same kind of experience, it helps them feel like they’re not alone.
Libby also flashes back to a memorable trip with her father, with the help of a special stone called Vitality that’s the lifeblood for the Keepers. After my father died, I experienced vivid dreams I know now were visitations. Several times, I could even smell him, just for an instant, next to me in the car, in church. These powerful experiences actually helped inspire the character of Libby, several of the other characters in the series, as well as the series as a whole.
Paranormal romance was the perfect genre for the characters and ideas I had. When I brainstormed the series, I filled up two legal pads in three days. The series name, ‘Crossing Realms’ didn’t come until later, when I was finishing the first book. Libby’s character growth lent itself to that.
My father was my first storyteller, and and I mention him frequently in my blog posts. He continues to inspire me.
Thanks for the opportunity to dish! 🙂

The Keeper, Crossing Realms Series Book 1
[Paranormal SciFi Psychic Romance]
Nick Geary, jaded clan leader of human guardians, the Keepers, is doomed to love a human woman who’s forgotten him, time after time, for thirteen years: Libby Klink, a skittish accountant who’s as terrified of her recent and strange intuitions as she is of her mundane existence.
When Nick is ordered by the clan’s guiding force to seek Libby’s help in defending the clan against enemy Betrayers, romance sizzles as the pair forms an unlikely alliance in their desperate search to discover the key to the clan’s salvation—which Libby alone holds.
But a haunting secret could cost Nick everything, and in a race against time, both will be forced to choose between their hearts and duty. Can their love, and the clan, survive, or will the very forces that drew them together ultimately destroy them?
