How much of your real life bleeds over into your books? And do you worry that someone will be able to tell the fact from the fiction?

Keeping it Real
As writers we get our inspiration from various places. TV, music, dreams, and even people that are close to you. I mean I’m sure you’ve seen the meme “be nice to an author or they’ll kill you in their next book” and while that is a little dramatic, it can be true to a lesser extreme.
My stories are character focused. I work to give them quirks and flaws. Little nuances that will help make them well rounded. This is for main and secondary characters alike. The best way for these to come off as believable is for me to pull them from the people around me.
The main character in my first book is a people pleaser. She doesn’t like confrontation and will hold her tongue and avoid really saying what’s on her mind until she reaches her breaking point. That trait she got from a close friend of mine. I’ve been her “shoulder to cry on” when she’s frustrated by whoever at the time, but she would never say all the things to the actual person. So, while some readers weren’t a fan of my character’s personality in that sense, I knew it was true to life.
In that same book, the main character has a very close friend. No, she’s NOT me. But she does share quality traits of my younger sister. Macy is fun, out spoken, and sex positive. She also enjoys shopping, and treating those around her like dress up dolls. When I wrote my book, I didn’t tell my sister I’d used her for some aspects of Macy, but when she read it, she was like “hey that’s me.” She was able to pick up the traits I used even without me telling her. And yes she was excited about it.
In the following book, I gave the leading man traits from my husband and her boyfriend. My other half must organize all his CDs (yes he still has those) and movies alphabetically. My leading man still listens to CDs and keeps them in order the same way. He also has a thing for buying shoes and clothes like the sister’s boyfriend. Both men were happy to hear they made it into a story.
For me, fact does bleed into my fiction and makes it better.
