CTR asked:

How much of your real life bleeds over into your books? And do you worry that someone will be able to tell the fact from the fiction?

Laura M. Baird said:

For me, I think it’s hard NOT to have a bit of my life bleed over into my books. It may be subtle, like a favorite saying or quirk that a character has, or it may be an actual incident or otherwise. For instance, the heroine in my debut novel is a pianist, and I played piano when younger. I of course didn’t make it to the symphony level, but I had a good understanding of music and what the character would feel when performing. Another character from a different story was shy and introverted, and that was me to a “T”. I hardly ever strayed from what was expected of me, and meeting new people felt awkward and slightly terrifying. I have however, greatly improved in that area. Many of my stories occur where I’ve lived so I’m familiar with the area and want others to come to enjoy a part of that world as well.

Character traits, feelings, and ethics come into play, and when I write a protagonist, at first I find it difficult to insert dastardly deeds *insert chuckle* but realize it’s important to my story and find a way. I imagine taking out my anger on someone I would never actually do in real life, or stir up trouble, or make that snide remake that would otherwise have me biting my tongue. I also write what I myself may hope to experience or accomplish at some point in my life; like singing in front of a crowd or traveling to a part of the world I’ve never been or being so bold as to go after what I truly want. That’s not to say every character or even every book has a part of me in it, but I’d have to say a greater majority does.

Do I worry my readers may be able to tell fact from fiction? Not really. The fun is in the guessing, the wondering. I think readers are smart enough to realize this is fiction, so of course the bulk of my writing is made-up and comes from my imagination. Hopefully there’s enough of a blend of me and my imaginings to make it enjoyable.
