Hello All-

A monumental event occurred in my life last month.  My debut novel, Pretty Smart Girls-Lace Up was published with Entangled. I am so grateful to friends and family who have supported me through this journey, especially my husband, Mark.  In the Valentine’s Day spirit, I thought I would share with you my all-time favorite Valentine’s gift from Mark.

According to self-proclaimed experts on the subject, jewelry, flowers, and candy rank as the most coveted gifts for women on Valentine’s Day.

With all due respect to my diamond earrings, the most precious gifts I’ve received have not been delivered in a small felted box or a vase. They’ve been delivered in ink. As nearly 150 million cards are exchanged on Valentine’s Day, I am clearly not alone in cherishing the written word.

Here are a few of the written word highlights from my life.

  •  A card from my mom: “If I had known all my daughters would be like you, I would have had more.”
  • From my brother and sister-in-law urging me to finish my first book and send it to the Editor that had requested it, “Submit.”
  • From the State Bar of Michigan: “PASSED.”
  • The Valentine’s poem from my son written in third grade penmanship: “Roses are red, violets are blue, my mother is too good to be true!”

And of course my all-time favorite came to me from my husband. We had paused our work day mid-afternoon and gone to Starbucks for coffee. I was at least eight months pregnant and feeling large and awkward.  Somewhere in the midst of our conversation he slid the wooden stir stick from his coffee across the table to me.  Written in neat capital block letters were the words, “I am so happy you are having our baby.”

Should I be so lucky as to live a life full enough to someday move into a nursing home, I imagine myself in a wheelchair being rolled in with a shoebox on my lap. It will contain all of the notes I mention above along with my stir stick…and life will be just fine, for I will know that I have loved and lived a life well-loved. (And just so they know what they’re dealing with at that nursing home, I’ll wear my diamond earrings too!)

I’m giving away a $25 Amazon gift card! Just leave a comment below about your favorite gift (Valentine or other) to win. Don’t forget to include your email address!
