I want to introduce myself! My name is M.D. Stewart and I’m a new author and new to Coffee Time Romance. I appreciate your stopping by to read this! Now, a little about me. I’m from southern WV, and live with my husband, dog, cat, and chickens! When I’m not canning our garden veggies, I write steamy science-fiction and paranormal romance. I write both straight and LGBTQ love stories. My first book was self-published on Amazon in August of 2018. I was turning 50 at the end of the month and I wanted to have my first book “out there” before I hit that milestone!
I had read years before that to be successful, you should have about four books ready to hit the market. So after writing, about that many books, I contacted an editor and sent her my first book. I was SO excited to get her reaction. I thought she’d email me back hailing me as the next J.K. Rowling and tell me how perfect my book was. Annnnnnnnd you know where this is going!
I made mistake on top of mistakes; head-hopping, wandering plot, and etc. She didn’t even finish my manuscript before sending it back and telling me to fix what was wrong before she’d continue editing. I was nearly destroyed! The sad part was, I’d finished those other books in the series, and I knew they needed fixing too! It was an overwhelming sense of failure. I wondered if it was worth it. But, I shook off the melancholy and tore into my stories. I loved my characters and I wanted to get them out there for other people to fall in love with too. The only way to do that was through hard work.
Getting your book back from the editor is like waiting to hear how imperfect your child is! Writing is agonizing and it took me a few books to realize that the first draft is usually not anywhere near where the final book will be. And it should be that way! We all have areas of improvement and an editor will show you how to do that. Being rejected is a nightmare, yes, but I knew I had to suck up the hurt feelings, and I realize where I can grow. And as a therapist once told me, growth hurts! Not gonna lie, it still is painful to hear my baby needs improving. I usually take a breath and a day to calm down before I dig back in.
I’ll have other posts to tell you about my books and the characters. But I don’t want to make these posts too long, especially my first one. I want you to come back! If you’re interested you can check me out on Amazon on my Author Page, at https://www.amazon.com/-/e/B07GBFKNDP or even my personal blog at https://wordpress.com/view/mdstew.art.blog.
Please comment and tell me a little about yourself. I’d love to get to know you too!
