Hi Romance Lovers,

A couple of years ago, I took a chance. I had multiple books published in paranormal romance as PJ Schnyder and my agent and editors asked me to take a shot at writing romantic suspense.

I was honest with them. I’d never tried writing in a contemporary setting without some element of the fantastic. Heck, all of my paranormal romance was post-apocalyptic. I’m especially fond of shapeshifters. I had no idea if I’d be good at writing romantic suspense. But I’m also open to try new things. So I pulled several romantic suspense novels and curled up for a weekend to read them.

It was a great weekend.

I found romantic suspense to be a fun, hot, tension-filled genre with a potential for fast-paced action. Having read several I enjoyed, I set myself to considering how I would approach writing a romantic suspense. I studied plot structures and beats for the contemporary romance and also for suspense stories. I set out to learn the difference between a mystery and a suspense.

In addition to the craft of writing a romantic suspense, I thought hard about what I wanted to bring with me from my previous writing. When it comes down to it, there’s a lot of elements of paranormal romance in common with romantic suspense. The pacing, for example, and the intensity of the alpha heroes. Both romantic suspense and paranormal romance can be dark and gritty, with a dangerous edge. Of course, there’s also the central romance around which the entire story is built. They’ve got a lot in common and I love writing them both.

Contracted Defense is the third Safeguard novel, finishing up my debut series in romantic suspense. It’s action-packed, because I do love writing those action scenes. It’s got a deliciously alpha hero with ancestry in New Zealand. He’s met his match in a capable, headstrong, experienced heroine. Their romance builds around mutual respect and a healthy dose of physical attraction.

I’ve really enjoyed writing this series. It’s been a wild ride. I plan to continue writing more romantic suspense and hopefully, I’ll be writing more paranormal romance in the future too. The two have a lot of similar flavors to them and I’d love to bring more of both to readers.

For now, enjoy Contracted Defense. Time is running out for the Safeguard team and the enemy is at the gate.

Enjoy the adventure!

xoxo

Time is running out and the enemy is at the gate.

Adam Hicks may be the rookie at Safeguard, but he’s no novice in the field. Retired from active duty after multiple tours and back fresh from a brief rest in New Zealand, he’s itching to return to action. But the challenge he hoped for arrives in an unexpected form: his sexy yet stern new partner.

The last thing Victoria Ash wants is to work with the new guy—especially one as gorgeous as Adam. His relaxed attitude about their first “easy” assignment together—setting up a private home defense network for a reclusive client—doesn’t impress her. Easy usually means trouble. She’s proved right when Adam discovers that the multiple incursions on the physical and cyber security systems aren’t just glitches. They’re under attack…and there’s a traitor in their midst.

As tension mounts, so does the attraction between Victoria and Adam. They must protect their client and the research he’s desperately trying to keep secret. Working together, they have to find the mole before their defense measures, in the fortress and online, are compromised and the deadly secrets they’ve sworn to protect are revealed.
