Abagail Bergstrom accidentally discovers her fiancé is keeping dreadful secrets. She learns that the man she has loved since she was twelve years old is not actually known to her at all. Abby flees for her life.

David Neilson sends his trusted henchman in pursuit of Abby. Angry and aggrieved by her betrayal, David becomes more and more obsessed with finding her as the days pass. David’s wealth and political clout give him the advantage, and Abby is tired of running.

Abby teams up with a precocious street urchin, Stevie, and together they slip out of Chicago. Then they begin a journey westward, and along the way discover hidden strengths and unlikely friendships. Both will finally reconcile some past issues, and Abby may have a second chance at love if she can find the courage to trust once more.

I love the way in which the author drew the characters in this exciting romantic suspense novel. The conversations seem true to life. At times, I felt the pacing was a bit slower than I liked, but the suspense is maintained beautifully. It is allowed to build and build and build throughout the story in an overall supremely satisfying manner. I loved the scene when a prairie dog bit the henchman, Percy. Oh! How I cheered for that little rascal! Stevie stole many of the scenes – and she surely stole my heart. Like Abby, I loved her almost from the start. This is a story to savor and one that will tug your heartstrings at unexpected moments.
