September 2019: Office Space
~ Ryshia Kennie ~

CTR asked:

Describe the space where you write. Is it an office? A coffee shop? Messy desk?

Ryshia Kennie said:

My office was once a spare bedroom in a dark and mostly uninhabited basement. I wrote upstairs on a shared computer. Then, another computer entered our lives, and I made the move. I claimed the unoccupied basement bedroom as my office and moved into a room that looked nothing like an office. Then, it was boxed in by panel board and accented by vibrant red and gold carpet that refused to fade despite its apparent age. Lack of looks aside, I settled in. And, it was here that I wrote and published my second novel, a paranormal romance. Both the office and the writer were still finding their way.

Now, over a decade later, I’m writing romantic suspense and women’s fiction and I’m still in my basement office. Except now, it actually is an office. New carpet, paint – proper shelving and a desk with adequate lighting has made a world of difference.

So, let me take you on a virtual tour of my office.

It begins in a cozy reading area that leads into the office. Here you’ll find books I’ve treasured through the years including a vintage copy of Heidi I read the year I turned nine and, of course classics, like Stephen King and Agatha Christie. Turn left and you’re in my office where my desk sits between low-riding file cabinets and the bookshelves that contain reference books and try to keep the fact in fiction. On my desk sits my computer, a calendar with a daily motivational quote and a diary book. On the shelf above my desk, there are a few good luck charms. One is a rock from Mount Vesuvius that a friend brought back and gave to me, claiming that it was good luck. On the floor, there’s a pair of slippers with rabbit ears and whiskers that were given to me to fulfill the standing joke between friends – that to write, I had to wear my bunny slippers. There’s a sweater that used to be my Dad’s on the back of my chair. He’s gone now but that sweater hangs over the chair reminding me of our shared love of stories and words. And there are other mementos here of people, of things, of accomplishments. And, of course, there’s a few too many notebooks, pens and paper.

I love my office but if the truth were told, it’s my computer that is my headquarters. While on holidays, I’ve been known to set up my laptop in any space, even a closet. But none of those spaces are truly my office, this office. This one is special. I love being down here on a cold winter day, with coffee in one hand and a story idea heating up the keys. And I don’t know how I got so lucky for either this space, this career or, most especially, my readers. It truly is a writer’s life.
