CTR asked:

What is something you wish you’d known when you first started writing? (Craft or career).

Kate Hill said:

I wish I had known that being a writer is different than being a published writer. Whether traditionally published or self-published, if you’re selling your work, then there is a lot more to it than writing stories.

You must be prepared to market yourself and take the time to connect with other writers and readers. It’s important to have a website or blog that’s a central place for readers to find out about you and your work. Most authors are also on social media. Some are great at handling multiple social media sites, but if you’re like me, you might focus mainly on one that you really like. Not all authors enjoy running a website, blog, or social media page, but they can pay an assistant or promo service to help. Whether you prefer to do it yourself or pay someone to do it for you, having an online presence is an important part of being a published writer.

If you choose to publish your books independently, you’re not only responsible for promotion, but for complete editing, formatting, and cover art. Generally that means finding people with the skills and talent to help prepare your book for publication. Everyone needs at least a second set of eyes to catch mistakes, and while some authors are also talented artists or graphic designers, that’s not my case, so I need good cover artists for my indie books.

Whether writing for pleasure or writing with publication in mind, you’ll have fun working on your stories, but if you want to put your work out there, be prepared to do much, much more.
