QUESTION: What inspired you to write your debut novel?

Katherine McIntyre said:
My debut novel, An Airship Named Desire, was a blend of my favorite things: steampunk, pirates, and the sci-fi show Firefly. When it comes to steampunk, my primary inspiration is the community itself. I’ve attended a fair amount of steampunk conventions in my day, and the vast array of gadgets and costuming that the patrons come up with jogs the imagination in a heartbeat. I love the creativity that the aesthetic provides as well, since steampunk doesn’t prescribe to hard and fast genre rules.

So, in the steampunk world, pirates aren’t just the average sea variety. They take to the sky in airships instead. However, even if these pirates are in the sky, I’ve been in love with the swashbuckling feel of those adventure tales since I was a kid. That sort of vibe works its way into many of my manuscripts, and An Airship Named Desire is the epitome of swashbuckling adventure. One of my favorite scenes in the book is the storm. It’s a favorite battle of mine in pirate stories, man versus nature, and for an airship, the storm is a different level of intense while they’re flying through the sky in the middle of it.

As for the final bit of inspiration, I’ve always been a geek, so it was only natural that the western and rugged feel of Firefly ended up weaving into my story. Also, the snark. If I have one greatest strength as an author, it’s snarky dialogue, and An Airship Named Desire has it in spades. I adore science fiction and fantasy in all their forms, book or show alike, and they’ve been a constant influence since childhood, so I love honoring them in my work.

All of those elements wove their way into the manuscript of my debut, facets of the things I love most to produce an unforgettable story with one of my favorite crews to ever sail the skies.

An Airship Named Desire (Take to the Skies 1)

[Steampunk Adventure]

Airships, sky-pirates, smugglers and soldiers… An Airship Named Desire is an action-filled steampunk adventure.

Ever since their last botched smuggling job, First Mate Bea and the crew of her airship can barely afford fuel, let alone a barrel of grog. So, when a gentleman from Old Germany offers them a fortune to steal a locked box from a British merchant airship, they jump at the opportunity. Somehow, though, their employer forgot to mention the box’s military escort, and the Morlock mercenaries who would kill to get their hands on it. Oh, and that if made public, the contents could engulf Europe in another devastating war.

Stealing the box was the easy part. Now, with a target on their back, and some of the toughest characters in the sky after them, they have to find a way to survive. If the crew of the Desire don’t polish their pistols and prepare for a hell of a fight, they’ll end up worse than grounded. After all, everyone from the Brits to the Morlocks will kill for the contents of that box, and no one survives an airship crash.
