QUESTION: What inspired you to write your debut novel?

Amey Zeigler said:
When I was in 6th grade, I watched this old movie called Charade with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. Audrey played this window of a man she hardly knew and his ex-Army buddies threatened her life and searched for $250,000 they thought belonged to them. (I told you the movie was old). Cary Grant helps her but as the Army buddies die off one by one, Audrey doesn’t know who to trust and everyone keeps lying to her. I loved the movie, the twist the turns, the suspense. I wanted to write a novel that was one part romance, one part suspense and one part comedy just like Charade.

I started with my protagonist who was inspired by my sister who carries a backpack around with anything you could possibly need. Toilet seat covers? She has them. Floss? Of course. Extra sunglass. That too. I wanted to create a investigative journalist who would be prepared for anything and Andy Miller was born. She smart, resourceful, plucky and competitive enough that there’s always a challenge.

The male protagonist was a little harder. I wanted someone who studied martial arts, so that means I had to study martial arts, too. I researched so many different types of fighting styles and wrote a lot of his scenes in my head while I punched on my punching bag. Hugh is mysterious, competent, competitive, and fun. He’s also seen too many things in his life and has a seriously complicated past.

The plot had to be twisty. I wanted Andy to feel out of her element, out of her depth and in over her head. I wanted her not to be able to trust anyone. I wanted her unable to go home. She needed to run away from something as well as toward something. So she’s running away from the mobsters and running toward the solution to who murdered her stepbrother and she has to figure out why.

Their romantic chemistry is fun. I wanted them to laugh and have fun together and flirt as well as an element of distrust. They have the right amount of sexy without crossing any lines.

Baker’s Dozen

[Clean Romantic Suspense]

Twenty-three year-old investigative journalist, Andy Miller is armed with her many disguises and creativity to take down the riff-raff of Saint Louis. When her stepbrother is murdered by the mob, Andy soon discovers she’s out of her depth.

Enter Hugh Donaldson who has reasons of his own for discovering the murderer. He’ll use everything in his power to achieve that, including lying to Andy about his past. Dangerous as he is attractive, his martial arts skills and his quirky ways raise Andy’s suspicions.

Although Andy balks at his lies, Hugh’s charms, twenty-inch biceps, and electrifying blue eyes are difficult to resist. Striking out on their own, Hugh and Andy try to outwit each other as they traverse North America tracking down people connected to the case.

As clues disappear and the body count climbs, Andy and Hugh must trust each other and use their combined skills to bring the murderer to justice.
