Katherine Bab leads a rather quiet life at Blackchurch Cottage. Her mother, Grace, is hers only by adoption as is her sister, Anna. Most of her day is spent stitching on garments that her mother will sell to a merchant in town. With any spare time Kat has, she spends it daydreaming of the Queen and life in London.

Christian Dawe is Kat’s friend and cousin. While young, they romp and play throughout the countryside. Christian helps take care of the family farm. He raises sheep and pears and is a happy young man. Marrying Kat is what the family has expected, but getting his heart broken was not part of the plan.

When their mother dies, Kat packs her and Anna’s things and sets off for London. Kat has a mystery to unravel, and London seems the best place to start. She has never felt like she fit in, and with questions about her parentage, she is determined to find the answers. Becoming one of the Queen’s ladies puts Kat in a place where people may have the answers, but will they share the information?

The Stolen One is a remarkable tale overflowing with mystery and drama. As a fan of English history, I was unable to put the book down until I read it cover to cover. The characters came to life through this story, bringing Queen Elizabeth to reality in my mind’s eye. I feel honored to be privy to the inner workings of the Queen’s inner circle, even if only through fiction. While life as a Queen may seem glamorous and wonderful, Kat gets a look into the painful part of that life. Armed with many historical facts and characters, Ms. Crowley uses these to enchant the reader and enhance a delightful adventure. This is a story I would highly suggest for readers of any age.
