The story of Max and what he went through not only gives a vivid detail of the time but also an emotional rollercoaster as we go through his life. Understanding the joys and losses he faces as the story unfolds created a deeper emotional bond and the desire to see him have his own happily ever after.

We get a deep look into what it was like to grow up during a time of war and the bonds that are formed throughout the story. How the other characters helped to shape Max and played important roles in his life. Between Max’s Opa, Lieutenant Bob Townsend, and the two women he loved, Renée and Annaliese. Through Renée we learn what it was like for those fleeing from Hitler through her story. While Annaliese gives us a glimpse of the life of those who were caught in the middle of it and had to suffer.
Throughout the course of the story, we experience a life full of struggles, choices, the desire for revenge and how life can come full circle. We see the willpower of human strength and the resilliance it takes to overcome hardships. We also witness the growth of a young and naive boy into a man who has learned to treasure the possibilities life can have.Although I do not normally read these types of stories, I can say that Max’s War: The Story of a Ritchie Boy is a gripping story that pulled me in from the beginning. You could feel the author’s passion in the story and characters, while knowing that the details were historically correct.
