Take a look at the extraordinary pictures of the Starlight Roof and imagine six hundred people in gowns and tuxedos in one room. The author describes the Waldorf-Astoria as the epitome of luxury and excellence. This cookbook is an incredible representation of that descriptor.

John Doherty has provided us with a work of art. The pictures are so incredible, they pull you into an exciting history that is the epitome of a Cinderella story. Tucked in between these glimpses of life, as you might dream it, are pictures of the dishes the chef has chosen to spotlight. If I did not know better, I would think those pictures were edible.

This new classic is chock full of succulent flavors described in easy-to-read recipes. The Chef’s Notes are awesome. Your questions are answered as if you had an expert at your elbow. The ingredients are not necessarily available at my local grocery store, but the Chef’s Notes have anticipated even that.

The Waldorf-Astoria Cookbook is the perfect gift for an aspiring chef or history buff. I think that these recipes, and some of their ingredients, are over and above most home cooks, but they are certainly challenging. John Doherty has given us all something in which to aspire – great food or a trip to New York.
