Graciela or Ela is the Dowager Duchess of Autenberry. She has been widowed for many years and is a bit of an outsider in London society due to her Spanish Heritage. She leads a boring and sheltered life.

Colin, Lord Strickland, is a handsome and powerful lord. He has decided to take a wife from this season’s crop of debutantes, but has not found one that he can picture as his wife in the long term.

Ela is deeply affected by the death of one of her close friends and is determined to live a little while she is still young. Her good friend convinces her to visit a notorious club. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but when her friend disappears into the club, she is out of her element and has to be rescued by her stepson’s best friend. Colin is all grown up now and the attraction is immediate, but their six year age difference will cause a scandal.

I enjoyed this novel. Ela is a sympathetic and realistic character whose self-confidence was destroyed by an inconsiderate, neglectful, cheating spouse. Colin is a strong, almost heroic character, determined to win the woman he loves despite her misgivings. The premise of the older woman and younger man is the complete opposite of most novels set in this era. Typically the man is ten or more years older than the woman. For all his youth, Colin is very much an alpha male that the reader will love. Ela is no pushover either, making this book a pleasure to read.
