Jane is a professor of anthropology who is struggling to come to terms with the death of her husband. She begins the novel lacking self-worth since she believes her husband’s infidelity was because she is unlovable. After she meets Chris, Paul, and Gabe, they show her how she deserves to be loved and their unconventional relationship brings joy into her life.

Chris is a firefighter who meets Jane when her friend Belinda chokes on a sausage. Paul is an English professor who works at the same university as Jane and has asked her on a few dinner dates. Gabe is a cop whom Jane meets when he pulls her over for unsafe driving. Each man admits it was love at first sight.

Jane and Paul are dating and while she is not really sure about Mr. Right, she thinks he’ll do as Mr. Right Now. Then Jane meets Chris, and she thinks gods really do come to earth. She’s certainly never been kissed like that before. Still reeling, Jane meets Gabe. No one has ever looked into her eyes and understood her the way Gabe does. What’s a girl to do?

Shine creates a polygamous relationship between Jane and her men. What stretches the imagination is that all three of these men are supposedly heterosexual, yet after knowing each other for a mere twenty-four hours are happy to get naked together. It seems wildly unlikely that all three men would be okay sharing the woman they love. As strictly fantasy, on the other hand, who wouldn’t want three hot men to appear, fall madly in love with you, and then offer great sex. Jane is presented as a first person narrator which severely limits the knowledge of the reader, as we know only what Jane sees and experiences. It would have been nice to read what the men think of this relationship. It would also serve to address the believability issue. When reading, the flow of the narration is frequently interrupted by missing or incorrect words. Still overall, Shine offers a lighthearted and amusing retreat from reality.
