Lady Cassandra Montgomery is beautiful and well connected. She is very accomplished and the guardian of her late best friend’s child.
The Duke of Althorn is handsome and rich. He really does not want to be tied down, but his beloved mother is in need of trustworthy and reliable care.
Lady Cassandra has just been jilted by a man she has known since childhood. Her sister in law is making her life unbearable and has made threats towards Cassandra, her ward, and her nephew. Althorn’s mother has had a brain injury and been in the hands of an unkind nurse. Cassandra needs a husband and Althorn’s mother is very fond of her. Can a marriage of convenience turn into a love match?
This is an enjoyable story. The prose is a bit flowery for my taste and some of the plot points are implausible. An earl’s daughter whose family is not impoverished would not be teaching school. The Felicia character is supposed to be the villain, but she is barely a character in the story. All we know is that she was an actress, she travels a lot without her husband, and buys silver cigarette cases for other men. The love story between her and Althorn is pretty good and I liked it.
