Sara Lopez, a new teacher who is only in Copper Ridge to work off her student loans, never had a good reputation when she was younger and the recent end of her relationship with Hank Brand, the principal’s brother, only fueled more gossip. When she was a teenager she had a crush on Garrison, and came to find out his son, Zach, is in her class and is having issues with bullies. During their fateful parent teacher meeting she finds out two things. The first is that Garrison is really touchy about his son and secondly she still has strong feelings for him.

Garrison Taggart, a local rancher, has his own issues; his wife left him, pressure from his neighbors, the Brands, to sell his ranch, and finally his father’s health waning are only a few. His family’s ranch is also being sabotaged and his psychic ability to tell if someone is telling the truth has been no help. At the parent teacher meeting he was expecting that maybe Sara had seen signs of psychic ability manifesting in his son, now that his son is being bullied. There is something about Sara that grabs hold of his attention and despite his issues he finds himself wanting to see more of her.

Things look to be moving ahead nicely for Sara and Garrison until Hank Brand, her ex boyfriend and Garrison’s rival and neighbor, threaten her job if she does not keep away from Garrison. In order to pay her student loans she needs the job. It seems that Hank has gone off his rocker talking about sacrifices, a great one, and has some super secret operation going on near the border of their land. One day Sara stumbles into a plot to kidnap Zach, Garrison’s son plans to rescue him, but in turn gets taken too. Garrison will have to risk using the special abilities of his family to find them before time runs out.

This was a fascinating story and not like most of the paranormal romances out there with its unique setting and a creative use of the paranormal. The relationship between Sara and Garrison was sweet and the times they were together were smoking hot. My only frustration was Sara’s indecisiveness when it came to staying or leaving Copper Ridge, especially near the end when I thought she had made her choice. One thing that I liked was how Garrison made mistakes, owned up to them, and worked to make things right when he messed up. The paranormal aspect was not too prevalent, but it was a good introduction and foundation that future books can build upon. This is the first in a new series which sets the scene for a very exciting series to come with evil beings, psychic abilities, and intriguing mysteries.
