Kris Swanson, a morgue tech for the police, is gifted, or cursed, with the ability to see a person’s clock, which tells exactly when that person’s life will end. At the age of five she was found, and adopted, by a couple on a road in the forest and cannot remember anything before then. Seeing clocks is hard on her personal relationships, so she avoids commitments even though there is a sexy detective eager to have more with her. One night her life changes big time when she witnesses a murder, sees a hot guy trying to steal the soul from said murder, and learns she is a valkerie. It turns out that one murder is just a small piece in an elaborate plan by a fallen reaper with big plans involving demons and hell.
Logan, a half-demon half-reaper, had little trouble in his life until the murder where he meets Kris; he grabs the wrong soul somehow and he meets the first woman to resist his incubus charm. His half-brother had tasked him to retrieve the soul, but he ends up delivering the wrong soul and his brother sends an assassin after him who almost kills him. Lucky for him he was in Kris’s apartment at the time. In exchange for a sizzling night of sex, Logan gains powerful healing from Kris’s energy, but he also finds out that he does not want to be apart from her. He knows Kris is powerful enough to take care of herself, but he wants to help in any way he can to thwart his brother and the man behind the nightclub murder.
Logan is the first person Kris has met that did not have a clock, which is a relief, but he is also the hottest guy she has ever been with and has trouble resisting his charm along with the feelings he stirs in her. He seems to be pivotal to finding out who and what she is and can help her remember her past, which seems to be related to what is going on. What does the death of a business man have to do with it? Turns out a lot more than first thought. It is just one death in many where the souls are the main prize for Nicodemus, the person behind it all, who has big plans to buy into a position in hell. She remembers Nicodemus, but how does she know him? She has powers, but she cannot remember how to use them…. She will have to remember before time runs out and she loses those she cares for along with their souls.
Wow, this story opens with a bang … a sort of slam, bam, and thank you ma’am sort of bang that grabs your attention at the start and keeps a hold of it as you progress through. The story is full of action, interesting characters, a unique take on the lore surrounding valkerie, demons, and angels, and an interesting plot full of things you so did not see coming. Kris was an awesome character, I would have liked to learn more about what she thought concerning who she was, but I am hopeful that will be taken care of in later books. I loved Logan, at first it seems like he would be the proverbial bad-boy half-demon, but he was actually hiding a good-boy under his sexiness aura and had a personality and sense of humor that is easy to like. In regards to the ending I will just say WOW. I was not expecting that ending at all and that epilogue? I cannot wait to read the next book to see what happens with Logan and the detective who has that unrequited crush on Kris.
