I’d like to give a warm welcome to one of Ellora’s Cave’s new and up-coming authors Afton Locke.
Hi Afton, welcome to Coffee Time Romance and thank you for allowing me this opportunity to meet my first dominant ghost!
Which has to be my first question, why a ghost who enjoys spanking?
Jon is an alpha male who's so afraid of losing his true love he tries too hard to control her. Spanking is a titillating form of BDSM play because of the dominance/submission and pleasure/pain factors. It also requires no equipment, so it's quick, easy, and powerful.
Jon is a strong character even though he’s dead but he also has his fears not least of water. What is his greatest strength and is it helped any by his fears?
His greatest strength is love and going for what he wants. He fears loss most of all because he's experienced the pain of it firsthand. This fear drives him to be direct and passionate in getting what he wants.
Max is your bad guy turned good are you planning on giving him his own story?
Wow, I hadn't thought of that! As a gatekeeper of souls, he is an intriguing character. When I wrote the book, I thought of him as all evil, but when the editorial staff questioned his sudden reversal, I had to dig deeper into his character.
Is there a reason you choose Cicada as a research topic for Marian?
I got the idea for this book during a cicada outbreak, so the bugs made me write it. (Just kidding!) I also watched the movie, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, and I thought having a hunky ghost in the house could be really fun. The result was Jon, the dormant ghost.
Marian handles being ‘courted’ by a ghost very well and finds the spanking thrilling even after a disastrous previous relationship. Is spanking going to play a role in more of your books?
The pain from Marian's past relationship came from feeling unattractive and rejected, so Jon’s focused attention is an exciting contrast. Spanking is only part of it. He also ties her up. My future books will cover a variety of BDSM methods I've been busily researching. I have one in the works with hot wax…
How has your experience with the staff and other authors, as well as readers, been at Ellora’s Cave?
It's been great. Having a book published is a journey and it's nice to have so many helping hands along the way, especially when it's your first time. I've made a lot of friends I'd feel lost without.
What song do you think best describes you and why?
Looking for Space by John Denver. It's not one of his big hits, but I came across it when I was learning to play the guitar. In it he describes what it's like to be an artist trying to find yourself and riding the profound highs and lows of creativity with not much in between. He's one of my heroes, by the way. If I were a guy, I'd probably be a lot like him.
What is your idea of a romantic night out?
Being whisked away by the man of my dreams to a rocky seaside landscape at dusk. Enjoying dinner, wine, and conversation by candlelight. Holding hands and walking the beach barefoot. Kissing by moonlight. Even better if the man is an alpha like Jon. Someone who would move mountains for me and want to take care of me, even if I don't need it.
Do you use mood music, candles, no noise, when you write?
I can write okay with silence. Sometimes I play music while I write a key scene. It’s usually a song that fits my mood for the book or scene, and I'll play it over and over again. When I'm relaxing, I play music with headphones, letting my characters go crazy and do whatever comes to mind. I pre-generate a lot of plot this way. I also collage every book and look at the pictures while I write.
Do you have anything else planned for your readers?
Energy is my next contracted book through Ellora's Cave. It’s a futuristic ménage with male/male action. I will tentatively be signing it at the Ellora's Cave RomantiCon convention in October where I plan to meet a lot of readers and love to hear from them.
I'm also busily writing more paranormal BDSM and futuristic erotic romances. As the books come out, I'll be doing chats.
Thanks to an unexplainable curse, all the men on the planet Chromefield have lost their manhood, imperiling the survival of the species. When U.S. Astronaut Logan McKay crash lands on the planet, he must agree to perform an impossible test to get home again. A test which puts him in the bed of Alysa Barry, one of Chromefield’s most desirable women, and Cole Harding, jealous fiancé and government official. Logan only agrees to give them his body, but the resulting three-way bond thaws his solitary heart and inside just might be the key to saving the planet…if only they can convince him to stay.
Is there anywhere your readers can find you on the Internet?
The best place to find me is on my web site, which has excerpts, video trailers, reviews, and links to all my blogs.
I have a bi-monthly Thursday blog column called “Ask Afton”, which deals with relationships, at the Six Sexy Sirens blog I share with some terrific erotic romance authors.
I blog on the 9th of every month at the Goddesses of Storytelling where a different author blogs each day of the month.
I do a quarterly newsletter, called thelovechronicle, with authors Madison Blake and Kai Anderson.
Finally, anyone who wants to get inside Jon’s head can check out his character interview at author Alyssa Brooks’ site.
