Lark Cavanaugh is resilient, but her life has been anything but easy. It is a good thing her father taught her to be self-reliant.

Jesse Holt is a veterinarian. He has recently taken over his late father’s practice after serving as a military vet in Afghanistan.

In a matter of a few hours Lark lost her job, her fiancé, her best friend, and her home. She heads to Cape Cod where a distant relative has left her a house, a very haunted house. With the help of her very handsome neighbor, Jesse, she searches for the identity of the ghost, and its reason for haunting her new home.

I really enjoy a good ghost story, and this is the best one I have read in quite a while. The characters are contemporary, realistic, and sympathetic. I love the descriptions of both the house and the setting. I have never been to Cape Cod, but had no problem picturing the place. The plot is engrossing and eerie, as the two main characters try to find out exactly who is haunting the house and why. Their love story is equally well done. Lark is understandably a bit reluctant to fall in love with Jesse, but he wins her over gradually, starting with saving her cat during an emergency visit shortly after her arrival. This is a genre that is long overdue for a comeback, and this author is a master.
