The first six Cynster books deal with the stories of the six cousins known to the ton as the Bar Cynster. Subsequent books deal with other members of the Cynster family, extended family, and close friends.

I have talked about Johanna Lindsey in another book. This one has got to be one of my favorite books by her. I don’t know the exact reason behind the my love for this book. It could be because of how one sister goes out of her way to not be who she truly is and the hero sees through it. It could be because the male role is depicted by a man who is also struggling to be who he wants to be. Whatever the reason, A Man to Call My Own is just spectacularly good!

Ms. Petersen has written a sensational novel where she pits Jane’s pure innocence against Nicholas’ jaded past in Her Notorious Viscount. Where everyone else in Jane’s life sees her as some weak-kneed woman, he sees her as the strong, stubborn, and determined woman she really is. The Stoneworth family’s view of Nicholas is no better, seeing him as a worthless drunkard, fighter, and libertine while Jane sees him for the man he truly is. My favorite element of this tale is how the characters not only learn so much about each other, they learn how their fight for survival has made them a better person, someone they can be proud of and who can be loved for who they are, jaded past or not. This had to be my first pick for Historical Romance since it was the first book I actually ever enjoyed reading! I will never forget how I hated to read for so long. Then I picked up Johanna Lindsey’s Prisoner of my Desire and was swept away. I have been an avid reader ever since.
The year is 1152 and, as a woman, Lady Rowena Belleme has no rights. Her evil stepbrother, Gilbert d’Ambray, desires control over as much English land as possible and has pledged Rowena’s hand to Lyons of Kirkburough-a man so near death he is a walking corpse. Rowena at first refuses, but Gilbert threatens to kill Rowena’s mother if she does not comply. Before the marriage can be consummated, Lyons dies and Rowena celebrates her good fortune, until Gilbert arrives with a new plot-Rowena must become pregnant before Lyons’s death is announced. For three nights, Rowena lies with a handsome stranger kidnapped by Gilbert’s men. Ashamed at the mistreatment of the man and knowing that Gilbert plans to kill him, Rowena helps him escape. Soon after, Kirkburough is attacked by Gilbert’s nemesis Lord Fulkhurst. If I cannot be transported back to old day Scotland, then toss me into the Civil War era. Southern Belles, plantations, mint juleps. My only problem would have been the fact that I am anti- slavery.
Margaret Mitchell first entered my reading list when I was a senior in high school. She transported me back in time, introducing me to Scarlett, Rhett, Ashley and Tara. Characters I fell in love with and continue to fall in love with every time I read “Gone With the Wind”.
Alexandra Ripley continued on with “Scarlett”. It may not have gone exactly how Ms. Mitchell would have intended, but it kept the characters alive for a little while longer, answering a few questions readers may have had.
Donald McCaig took up Rhett’s story in “Rhett Butler’s People”. Not necessarily a romance, but I consider it part of the set. It gives the reader a little more in depth look at who Rhett Butler is.
Ms. Mitchell and Ms. Ripley have left this world. I couldn’t find a website for Mr. McCaig. You may not consider these romances, but for me, it fits the description.
In the Highlander’s Bed by Cathy Maxwell is a sensual read full of romance, adventure, swordplay, battles, and capturing the woman that rightly belongs by your side. Here is a short blurb, ‘Highland warrior Gordon Lachlan has spent his life fiercely battling the English. Now, to claim victory for his clan, he must retrieve the legendary Sword of the MacKenna from the hands of his mortal enemies. His plan: to kidnap Constance Cameron from her remote boarding school and force her wellborn relatives to surrender the sword as her ransom. But Lachlan is surprised that the woman he’s snatched from her bed is no malleable miss. Constance longs for adventure. She’s tantalized by Lachlan and his passionate cause . . . and tempted enough by his seductive ways to wonder what it would be like to find herself in the Highlander’s bed . . .’ Lachlan and Constance are lively players that definitely keep the story moving at a good pace.
Another interesting read is, In the Bed of a Duke, and here is a short blurb, ‘The distressed traveler Charlotte Cameron encounters on a rainy Scottish night is absolutely the worst man she could have invited into her carriage! It is Phillip Maddox, the reprehensible Duke of Colster, who brought the full weight of the ton’s fury down upon her – simply because Charlotte encouraged her sister not to wed the powerful peer. And now the seductive devil responsible for her social ruin is sitting close enough to kiss . . . Phillip’s distaste for the meddlesome beauty matches Charlotte’s – though, under alternate circumstances, he might have enjoyed sampling the sensuous charms of the tempting young chit. There is grave danger, however, on the journey they now must reluctantly share – and a nemesis who means them both mortal harm. But can a passion that inconveniently ignites in the face of disaster erase a painful past . . . and lead two sworn enemies to a most unanticipated destination: the bedchamber?’
And who can forget, The Marriage Contract, another fine read that leaves the reader spellbound completely, here is a blurb, ‘Journey to nineteenth-century Scotland . . . a land of romance and dreams. There, away from the stifling ballrooms and idle gossip of London, a debutante hopes to find a life she could only have imagined . . . and a noble Highlander discovers that the truest love of all awaits him in the form of an unexpected bride-to-be. I have to mention a book that really tops the cake, and that is Captain’s Surrender. This is a book that still triggers the mind. I know it is a different type of romance but this historical novel by Alex Beecroft is truly a masterpiece and sensational read. The blurb alone grabbed me, ‘Ambitious and handsome, Joshua Andrews had always valued his life too much to take unnecessary risks. Then he laid eyes on the elegant picture of perfection that is Peter Kenyon. Soon to be promoted to captain, Peter Kenyon is the darling of the Bermuda garrison. With a string of successes behind him and a suitable bride lined up to share his future, Peter seems completely out of reach to Joshua. But when the two men are thrown together to serve during a long voyage under a sadistic commander with a mutinous crew, they discover unexpected friendship. As the tension on board their vessel heats up, the closeness they feel for one another intensifies and both officers find themselves unable to rein in their passion. My heart races. My palms are sweaty. My skin flushed. My mouth watering. These are the signs I reveal when I am reading a book from this series. And, yes, I read these books repeatedly.
Outlander begins the series in Inverness, Scotland, 1945, where Claire Randall is on her honeymoon with her new husband, Frank. The true tale begins when Claire steps through a stone circle and steps back in time to the 18th century Scotland where she meets the love of her life, Jamie Fraser. This man is the reason for the above symptoms. Ms. Gabaldon has this way of writing that envelops the reader in the world of Claire and Jamie, making the reader a part of the adventure these two are experiencing.
I’m not sure if it is the rugged beauty of Jamie and the love he has for Claire or if it is the beautiful words that flow from his tongue as he expresses that love, but this man touches my heart every time.
This a smart and funny series filled with action, adventure, history, sci-fi and romance.

I have been a huge fan of historical romances for years. My husband and dad used to buy me this genre because they were thicker than normal books and often had the smuttiest covers. At least in their opinions. MEN! What they didn’t understand is the joy I experienced jumping into the pages and following the adventures of the leading characters. My favorites were always the ones where the knights rode into save the day.
I have been a fan of King Arthur and Camelot since I could understand what things two things were. When I discovered the Kinley MacGregor (most know her as Sherrilyn Kenyon) series, Lords of Avalon, I found a little piece of paradise. These books show the darker side of Camelot. Arthur is dead and his knights are gone, but the Holy Grail lives on.
To my dismay, there are only two books in the series so far. There is a 3rd on its way, but not soon enough for me.

This was the first novel of Paula Quinn’s that I had ever read. But since then I have not only read other works of hers, but I keep going back to this one. There is something about a story that surrounds a woman and her enemy that gets to me. I just love the conflict and the emotional highs and lows that happen within the storyline.
Lord Brand “the Passionate” Risande defeated Lady Brynnafar Dumont’s father in battle and has now come to claim the Dumont castle. Brynna vows to do whatever it takes to protect her family’s Saxon retainers, even if it means marrying the conquering Norman brute. When Brynna finally meets Brand, she is shocked to discover that he is the man she briefly encountered a year before who has since haunted her every romantic fantasy. Suddenly, the idea of wedding the sinfully sexy nobleman becomes much more appealing, but Brand, who caught his former betrothed in the throes of passion with another man, has no interest in marriage. Brynna knows that earning Brand’s trust and love will not be easy, but she is determined that this is one battle she will definitely win.
When the topic of this month’s Book Brew came up, the first author to pop into my mind was Hannah Howell. She has been one of my favorite authors for years. It is the way she can send you back in time to visit with the Highland vampires, the Murray clan or just to see what the dukes and lords of old were up to.
The Murray clan books hold a very special place in my heart since that is my husband’s last name. I picked up my first Hannah Howell book for that reason alone and fell deeply in love with her writing. Whether it is Scotland, the New World, England, Hannah has the ability to make the reader feel alive within the very pages from which they read.

Elizabeth Hoyt, what can I say. When it comes to Historical Romance, she can certainly spin a gripping read that forever lingers in the memory. She gives her readers driven characters that practically romance and seduce through the pages. To Seduce a Sinner is just one of her marvelous books that is awe-inspiring in every way. Melisande Fleming has loved Lord Vale from afar, even as he seduces many lovers. Then after he is jilted on his wedding day, she grabs her chance to be his. When Melisande offers to be his bride, Vale accepts willingly. He needs a wife to produce an heir. She gives her body, yet is her heart in her actions? As Vale begins to seduce his seductive new wife he sets out to learn the secrets behind the woman who is day by day stealing his heart. Oh yes, this book is one not to be missed. Oh, Madeline Hunter, does she ever not write a bad historical romance, no. They are all, always super grand. The Sins of Lord Easterbrook has electric shock from the first page to the last. It was just a simple kiss, one that left a desire that never left. A passion that long would not be denied. Leona Montgomery’s sensuality was awoken by a mysterious young adventurer who happened to be full of dark chaos and sinful inclinations. It is when she meets her adventurer again that hot chemistry ignites once more but when he sets out to seduce her, will he end up with the prize? I think of all the ones that have really took hold of my heart and never left, is Dark Stranger. This is one book I could read over and over again and never grow tired of it. While we are talking about Ms Graham, let us mention Ride A Stranger, oh, yes. The war was over . . . Shannon McCahy and Malachi Slater, embittered by the conflict, still fought a raging battle of wills all their own. A Yankee whose only solace was the land she had struggled to save, Shannon hated the hot-tempered Malachi, a Rebel on the run who stood for all she had come to despise. Yet, as jayhawkers, and bushwhackers descended upon the lawless Missouri border, the two joined forces in a desperate search for their endangered loved ones.
